This week on We Dig Plants Carmen and Alice sit down with architect and fellow HRN host Curtis B. Wayne to discuss the process of building a green roof--a process that, as green as it may be, is a bit more complex and work-intensive than some may think. The trio touches on everything you need to know whether its leakage prevention or plant and soil choice.

Wayne, Burning Down the House, Cooper Union, Harvard Design School, converting your roof to a green roof, green roof is a buzz word now, New Yorkers pay on average $1000 a square foot, New York City Building code requires that roofs have to resist and carry the worst ordinary environmental load, accumulation of snow, buildings are designed to sustain 30 pounds per square foot, dead load is the weight of the structure, live load is anything else, it takes a lot of people to add up to 30 pounds per square foot across the whole roof, we analyze loads based on duration, soil saturated with water is a long term load that leads to long term weakening, soil is an insulator, how do you determine what your roof can hold?, concrete loft buildings would require core samples of the structure, ground penetrating radar, engineered soil, are there ways to get around weight issues?, you could open up the ceiling, you want to make sure you don't introduce opportunity for leaks in the building,

On this week's episode of Hot Grease, Nicole Taylor has a wealth of guests in the house. Arnetha Singleton, Virginia Cunningham, and Joan Bryant are in the studio talking about their work in the Ingersoll Garden of Eden in Ft. Greene, Brooklyn. Tune in to hear the ladies talk about about food from the South, from boney fish like porgies, to wild pokeweed greens. Hear their opinions regarding the new interest in gardening and farming amongst young people. Later, Nicole is joined by Rahul Saksena and Jamel Freeman of the Restaurant Opportunities Center of New York, better known as ROC NYC. Tune in to hear about the need for justice for restaurant workers, as well as all workers who supply us with food. You don't want to miss this one, so tune yourself into some Hot Grease! This episode has been brought to you by White Oak Pastures.

"She sent me mustard seeds, turnip seeds, carrots, string beans. Many of the gardeners- we can't find the seeds here. Some of the gardeners were asking me if could call my sister and if she would send them some seeds, so she did." -- Arnetha Singleton on getting seeds from North Carolina, Hot Grease

"It's exciting because years ago, you would have never heard of young people picking up any kind of activities like this. If you would have said anything about farming, especially farming on the rooftops and little square places in the community, they would have thought you were crazy" --Joan Bryant on Hot Grease

"We really want this to be a part of sustainability. How can you have your food be sustainable, but the workers who bring it to you are not being invested in." --Jamel Freeman on Hot Grease
