This week on Catch It, Cook It, & Eat It Ben calls in from the field: the pier on North 5th st. in Williamsburg, where contestants in the Brooklyn Fishing Derby are feverishly digging buckets of frozen and fresh bunker to try and outdo the current champ. Learn the methods of these master fishermen, including how they handle bungees and bathroom breaks.

Ben Sargent, Catch It, Cook It & Eat It, Jane, The Baitrunner, the female constituency of the Brooklyn Fishing Derby, the final days of the Derby, the pier on n5 in Williamsburg, the leader of the derby has a 45 inch striped bass, spending the night by the pier to stay there all day and night, fishing background started on a boat, Valentino pier, a message from the leader of the derby, whats it like fishing with a girl?, are girls good luck for catching fish?, was catching the big fish the best feeling he's ever had?, how is it that these people are able to fish so much?, fishing on your lunchbreak, fresh bunker DOES make a huge difference, when you freeze bunker you must individually wrap them and get ice in between, bunker can get freezer burn and then it looks like it was already chewed (& not appetizing to a fish), collecting blood for fishing, bring us a pie!, rod and reel critique, you want to keep the fish as healthy as possible when you throw fish back, using bungees to hold a reel while having a cup of coffee, fisherman never seem to have to pee, do fish like color or will they avoid it?, apparently red lines aren't as good as green lines, fly fishing, fly guy stayed, a huge Condor Eel in Redhook, The Woods, the Derby's Award Ceremony, John Raffino, there's a fish!, the reel is stuck,To comment on this episode click here. BR Shute, Hearty Roots Farm, Tivoli NY, BR is Sev's neighbor, Redhook, Hearty Roots does CSA for thousands of customers a week, National Young Farmers Coalition, a movement of young farmers from around the country to enact policy reform, BR is trying to figure out how we can be sharing tools through Farm Act, FarmAct.net, Farm Show is a great magazine thats been around for a long time for conventional farmers to showcase their inventions and workshops, Farm Show is focused on rather bigger scale farms than younger farmers may want, hobbey-oriented inventions, you can subscribe to Farm Show so do it--keep it alive!!, FarmHack.net, ways to share ingenuity and ideas, lots of new farms in the Hudson Valley, there is way more of a market for organic farms CSAs and farmers markets in the Hudson Valley, land prices are still really high in the Hudson Valley so its hard to get land, young farmers are renting land or trying other schemes, land issues, land conservancies, land trusts, land trusts being kind to farmers, illustrations from the 1940s explaining soil nutrients, micronutrients, soil without potassium won't grow much, science got rather simplictic during the times of chemical agriculture, a successful operation requirses a certain set of ingredients, you don't just need people who are gonna buy the food or grow the food, you need allies in other places, you need the land trust to prioritize farmers, getting MIT engineering students and young farmers in the same room to invent and engineer things together,More with BR (9:41)
