    Richard Wiswall, Vermont, The Organic Farmer's Business Handbook, the struggles of starting and running an organic farm, there are plenty of books on production but not many on how to run a successful farming BUSINESS, a thirst for knowledge after ten years of farming, what do i need to do to make a successful business?, talks and papers culminating in a book, retirement planning, how to spend money in your business effectively, Cate Farms, the Cate Family, dairy and sheep farm, Plainfield Vermont, Richard started in 1981 as a parnership with four other people, low-entry cost into farming, getting a bank loan to buy up the other partners shares, 148 acres, row crops and cereal grains, wheat rye and oats, seedlings and bedding plants, Deeproot Organic Truck Farmers co-op, it gets slower in winter time, leasing the land you use and avoiding a big starting mortgage to create a low-cost entry into farming, consulting with other farmers in New England to sharpen their business sense, new farmers face potentially overwhelming challenges, raising kids as you farm, leasing is a fraction of the cost of owning and relieves a lot of pressure, 50 to a hundred dollars an acre for good agricultural land, high gross sales per acre makes 50-100 $ per acre very doable, trying to talk a bank into buying a 200k dollar farm is difficult, make sure you get your markets lined up before you plant a seed!, planting food without knowing where its going can cause catastrophe, start a relationship with restaurants and stores before you start growing and see if they need food, Tuesdays are better than Mondays to approach people and way better than Fridays, don't approach restaurants at the heigh of meal time, there is no such thing as an ideal farm, Intervale, living in the city and leasing land on a flood plain and commuting to farm, NOFA conference, tax loopholes for farmers, what should a farmer know about doing his taxes?, being self-employed means you pay both ends of social security tax plus income tax, the IRS is encouraging businesses to re-invet in themselves, try to farm smart, farm from the neck up, being as efficient as possible, Common Ground, www.Catefarms.com,
