This week on Hot Grease Nicole speaks to Dena Wruble, who with co-author Tracy Rapp wrote "Simply Southern with a Dash of Kosher Soul", a cookbook that combines the down-home comfort food of the south (Tennessee, to be precise) with the rules and regulations of the Chosen People to create recipes that are deliciously Kosher. Agatha Achindu also calls in to discuss Yummy Spoonfulls, her made-to-order baby food company that just may be the most delicious food your tiny bundle of joy has ever eaten. Simply, Southern, with, a, Dash, of, Kosher, Soul, Fairway Markets,, Dina Warbly, Rosh Hashona starts September 8th and its the Jewish New Year, Yom Kippur is September 17th and is the day of atonement, Rosh Hashona is associated with apples dipped in honey, sweet items dominate the menu so you can have a sweet new year, its customary to stay away from bitter things like horseradish, Yom Kippur is a fast day, at the end of the day you have a big meal to break fast, Dina was short on Kosher restaurants in Memphis Tennesee, Dina put an ad in the paper for kosher recipes and recieved over 1500 recipes, Dina works in a school thats the foundation of the Jewish Community there, Nicole went to school in Athens Georgia with only one Jew, there are 10,000 jews in Memphis, Nicole and Dina's favorite chapter in the book is the desert chapter, Honey Cakes, Chocolate Pie, Classic Pecan Pie, Three Day Coconut Cake, Memphis Bluesberry Crumbled Pie, Nicole loves the seafood chapter, great Jewish delis in NYC have fish, Dina is a salmon person so she loves the apple and horseradish salmon, Nicole contests that this book is for everyone,

This week on Hot Grease Nicole hosts Mara Gittleman to discuss her organization Farming Concrete. While community gardens are a much-touted solution to environmental, food, and animal welfare issues, there is a surprising dearth of information about the amount of green gardens in NYC. Farming Concrete aims to gather all possible info about the city's gardens to help sustain current gardens and start new ones as efficiently as possible.
